Help Us Seal the Deal!

With football season gearing up in Saskatchewan, the Friends of the Bowl Foundation revealed success to date with SMF Field and the need for a final push to complete the SMF Clubhouse.

The new Saskatoon Minor Football (SMF) Field turf is already seeing incredible use.  Tackle football, flag football, soccer and conditioning camps are reaping the benefits of the ability to play on a top quality field, under the lights with a first class score clock and sound system.  “This is exactly what we envisioned happening” says Johnny Marciniuk, Operations Manager of Saskatoon Football Inc. (SFI), who manages the facility.

For the 2015 season, the new SMF Field already has over 1,000 hours of rentals booked in all levels of football. This equates to over a 600% increase in hours of usage compared to the 2013 season with the grass field. But a revitalized field is only a piece of the Friends’ vision.

The Friends stated the need to fundraise the remaining $1.5M to complete the clubhouse to their full vision.“The 12,000 square foot multi-sport performance centre will be an anchor at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex,” says Marciniuk. “It will act as an educational training centre for five sports, 7 months a year, hosting coaching, official and player clinics; sports science seminar; video training sessions; and league meetings, amongst other training.”

“We have had incredible support from the community for this campaign,” says Bryan Kosteroski, Chair of Friends of the Bowl. “Now, to complete the full facility, we need the final $1.5 million. This is the final stretch.”

The Friends have successfully raised $10 million to date with private and public sector commitments. The remaining $1.5 million will deliver a finished clubhouse that will provide increased rental space from user groups and support the annual operations of Gordie Howe Sports Complex, which services numerous groups and surrounding facilities that include 8 softball diamonds, 5 baseball diamonds, the speed skating oval, and the hockey rink. “The clubhouse completion is extremely important for SFI’s business plan to be viable,” says Kosteroski. “Completion is required to achieve projected revenue from office space and meeting rooms that makes the whole organization viable for years to come.”

The Friends’ timeline to finish fundraising is extremely short.  “We need financial commitments as soon as possible to meet the construction timeline,” says Kosteroski. Without these additional funds, the second floor of the clubhouse will remain unfinished, meaning lost revenue and an unsustainable business model for SFI, plus an unrealized home for sports training and services for its many user groups.

Supporters will have naming options available as recognition for a gift. “The clubhouse naming opportunity is available,” says Kosteroski. “Corporations looking to leave a significant mark on this community can do so for 30 years with this sporting complex.”

The Friends also have other well-defined recognition opportunities still available, such as field logos, and naming of high-traffic areas such as locker rooms and a multi-purpose room overlooking the field.

“We are committed to raising the final $1.5 million,” says Kosteroski. “We are committed to ensuring sustainable operations and to giving our community the clubhouse it deserves. And we need the community’s help.”

The Field is Almost Ready . . . But We're Not Done Yet

August 22, 2014

"The artificial turf is almost ready to go for September 6! The project is far from complete, though. We still need financial commitments to complete the full scope of our vision for a home for football in Saskatoon." - Johnny Marciniuk, Friends of the Bowl Foundation

It’s been a busy pre-season to reach this moment. The moment when our athletes will take home field to play on artificial turf. The moment when the new sound system thunders calls, when new lights illuminate all plays, and when that stunning scoreboard flashes 'touchdown'.

The Friends of the Bowl Foundation are pumped that you, our community, have helped make this moment happen. Your community support for the Bowl Field Goal Campaign is absolutely phenomenal. And it helped ensure we could deliver this field - the Saskatoon Minor Football Field - in time for our athletic community this season.

But we’re not done yet.

We still need to get to our $11-M end zone to complete the full scope of the Friends’ vision: a home for football. With your help, we will build a new entrance plaza, ticket booth and brand new 12,000 square foot clubhouse that will include:

  • 4 large locker rooms to accommodate teams
  • Meeting rooms for watching film
  • A concession to fuel fans
  • Officials' room
  • Therapist room
  • 4 large softball locker rooms plus umpires' room
  • Drive-through garage for equipment storage
  • 2nd floor multi-purpose room with outdoor viewing balcony

"We also eagerly anticipate the Provincial Government's support to ensure this project is completed to the full scope." - Greg Yuel, Campaign Chair

Let’s create this complete home for our champions.

Let’s showcase Saskatoon as host to the leading home sports field.

Let’s give our athletes a world-class facility for all ages.

Let’s help drive our teams to more victories—let’s give them a home field we’re all proud of.
